Hi everyone. His there someone in the group who can read cursive haketia? I received a document in hebrew characters that doesn´t seem to be Ladino and for sure is not Ivrit. I will copy a piece of the letter image here. Tks a lot!
Hi all. Does anyone ever worked or is connected with someone from the LARAIA family? I´m working with the profile of a Shoá survivor with this surname and there is almost nothing about the family in any of the DBs I´m searching for. Tks in advance!
Hello all. I´m searching for the roots of the family Valansi, who was originally from Izmir, moved to Salonica, then Paris (in the 30s) and then finally to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I found their name also written as Valensi. Is it possible that they were originally from Valencia, Spain or maybe this is only a misspelling?
Hello, everyone. Does someone in the group has the book "Dutch Jewry: Its History and Secular Culture (1500-2000). Edited by Jonathan Irvine Israel"? The book cites in page 157-158, a certain Mathatia Aboab, formerly Manoel Dias Henriques. I would really love to find what it is written about him, as there is no way to buy/read this book in Brazil. Tks in advance!
Hello and Shaná Tová to all of you. I was wondering if someone has ever researched or is relative to the Migueres/Megueres family. I saw in Jewishgen that there were some members of the family in UK/Gibraltar. The family that I´m helping came to Brazil in the middle of the 19th century. The unusual fact is that they came (or at least lived) in the rural area of Bahia, Feira de Santana. It is odd b...
A question for those who know sephardic/ladino (maybe turkish) surnames. Have you ever heard about the nickname Adidja (cyrillic spelling) added to a person´s name?
Hello to everyone. Has anyone ever heard of the surname Todelano/Todoliano/Todolano? It is not Toledano. There were some families both in Bitola and Skopje in Macedonia, before the Shoá. I first taught it was a spelling mistake in the databases but the original comunity books in Cyrilic confirm the surname.
Hello Everyone. CiaoIs there a jewish birth/marriage book from Ferrara available online? I´m searching for data about a certain Bruno Ascoli who migrated from Italy to Palestine (in 1939, before Israel). I already saw that the Ascoli where in Ferrara for quite some time. Tks and Grazie.
Hi all and Shabat Shalom. I´m trying to understand what was an organization (or maybe a ceremony) called Zihron Edut, who existed in Belgrade before the war. The registers says for instance "X was given to Zihron Edut in 19xx". The age of them was around 15-25 years. Tks for your help.
Hello all. Is it possible that someone has the complete tree that connect´s him/her to King David? As far as I remember, from David until his 13, 14 generation, this was in the Neviim, but 92 generations until Azores? Have you heard of the surname "Baylon"? There was a family who survived the Shoá in Dubrovnik, possible with this surname, maybe a typing error.
Profiting for the discussion on "yahrzeit" and thanking Michael Waas for encouraging me to post here, I´m dealing with the word "shiduch" and all its variations. I just started the discussion in other group having some interesting insights from Monique R. Balbuena. It is curious that one of the most detailed books on Sefardic traditions "Usos y Costumbres de Los Sefardies de Salonica", written by ...
Hi All! I´m searching for help in a research that I´m currently doing on jewish families from Romania in the 19 th century and before. My focus is in the sephardic families and almost all the documentation is in Romanian, which I don´t master (even with my portuguese and other latin languages fluency). Any suggestions?
Searching for those who have some information on the Sion/Sijon/Tzion family from Salonika. Part of the family migrated to Stip, Makedonija in the early 20th century. Everyone, with the exception of Issac Sion, who was a partisan, died in the Shoa. I´m trying to map the connections in the family, but data is (very) scarce.
Interesting to see that, even today, in Sarajevo, we are talking about "spanish" tradition.
Searching for information on the "Ever" surname, according to the Belgrade Chevra Kadisha database . This is the picture of the only grave in Belgrade cemetery with this family name. Maybe, because of the ע, could be something live "Hever" and all other possible vowel combinations. Any guess?
Would appreciate some help on the surname "Pacca". Is it common in Sephardic communities? Tks
Maybe some of our Italian friends in the group could help me in identifying the names written in the back of a post card. I recently write a post about them, the Italian saviors of my mother, but didn´t know their names. Now I found a postcard signed by them.

I´m searching for more information on the Saban (Sabhan) family. There is a grave in Belgrade Jewish Cemitery for a certain Salomon ben Moshe A Saban (1899-1937). Also, his brother Rahamim died in the shoa in the city. It seems that Moshe Saban was a Rav, maybe in Salonica. There are some yadvashem registers in France (families that came from Bursa) and some others in Salonica but not much else.
This picture is from the couple who saved my mother during WW2, in Milano. In the back it is written "Gabiatte i Mozatte". I only know that he was an engineer in a company called Montecatini. I imagine that Gabiatte could be Gabriel (or Gabriela). What would be your hint on "Mozatte"?
The Sefardi women in Bosnia, in Ladino, written by Laura (Bohoreta) Papo, considered by many the first "feminist" sefardi woman in the region. The text is from 1931. Unfortunately she died in the Shoa.
I´m searching for information on the Torino Jewish community in the middle of the 19th century. Are there records of the births, marriage, etc?
Does anybody in the group work with Jews from Bruges, Flandres? I´m searching for data on a certain Lodewijk Govaert, that left the city in the 15th century to Açores, has is name changed to Luis Goulart. His descendants are a significant part of the Acorean group who moved to Brazil in the beginning of the 18th century, settled in the south island of Desterro (now Florianópolis) and then spread t...
Another interesting document. A Nis Jewish Community Meeting Attendance List from the end of the 1910s. Note that some people sign in Cirilic and others in Hebrew characters. My guess is that the people who signed in Hebrew/Ladino were the old members, who probably didn´t even write in Serb.
